Overview
Morocco's premier beach resort was rebuilt from scratch after a catastrophic 1960 earthquake destroyed the original city. Today Agadir is a modern, planned city with a magnificent 10km beach, reliable year-round sunshine (340+ days/year), and a relaxed pace. It serves as the base for exploring the Souss Valley, argan forests, and the Atlantic coastal route south toward the Sahara.
History
The original Agadir was a Portuguese-built fort (1505) on the hilltop above the current city. A devastating earthquake on February 29, 1960 killed 15,000 people and destroyed 75% of the city in just 15 seconds. The city was entirely rebuilt 3km south of the original site. The old Kasbah (citadel) on the hill survived and offers views over the modern city and bay.
Culture & Traditions
Agadir is the heart of the Souss region, home to the Chleuh Berber people. Argan oil production and the associated women's cooperatives are culturally significant — visiting a cooperative is both authentic and supports local women economically. The Thursday Souk el Had is one of Morocco's largest weekly markets. Amazigh music (Rways tradition) is performed at festivals.
