Overview
Nested in the Rif Mountains at 600m altitude, Chefchaouen is Morocco's most photogenic town. Its medina is famously painted in shades of blue and white, creating an otherworldly calm that stands in sharp contrast to the intensity of Fes or Marrakech. It's a place for wandering slowly, breathing mountain air, and forgetting schedules.
History
Founded in 1471 by Moorish and Jewish refugees fleeing the Spanish Reconquista, Chefchaouen was closed to Christians and Jews for centuries — entry was punishable by death. The town's distinctive blue color is said to have been introduced by Jewish refugees in the 1930s, who associated the color with heaven and divinity. The Spanish occupied the town from 1920–1956.
Culture & Traditions
The town is famous for its weaving tradition — wool jalabas and blankets sold in the medina are locally produced. The Plaza Uta el-Hammam (central square) is the social heart. Traditional Andalusian music echoes through the evening. The surrounding Rif mountains have a complex relationship with cannabis cultivation — a reality that's part of the local economy.
