Overview

Al Hoceïma is Morocco's most beautiful Mediterranean coastal city — a compact Spanish-influenced town perched above spectacular rocky coves and turquoise sea. Surrounded by the Rif mountains, it offers some of Morocco's clearest swimming water, world-class fishing, and an authentic Amazigh (Berber) culture largely untouched by mass tourism.

History

Founded as Villa Sanjurjo by the Spanish in 1926 during the Rif War, following their defeat at the Battle of Annual (1921) by the Amazigh leader Abd el-Krim — one of colonial history's most significant anti-colonial victories. The city and region remain deeply proud of this Amazigh heritage. The 2016–2017 Hirak Rif movement (social protest movement) originated here.

Culture & Traditions

The Riffian Amazigh culture is the strongest in Morocco here — distinct dialects (Tarifit), music (ahidous), and women's traditional dress (tarifit costume with red and yellow striped fabrics). Fishing is the economic and cultural backbone. The weekly fish auction at the port is a local institution.
