Overview

Oujda is Morocco's easternmost major city, perched on the Algerian border in the Oriental region. Often overlooked by tourists, it rewards those who make the journey with a genuinely local Moroccan city experience — a vibrant medina, excellent street food, and a unique cultural blend shaped by its position as a historic crossroads between Morocco, Algeria and Andalusian Spain. The surrounding Oriental region offers extraordinary natural landscapes: the cedar forests of Debdou, the lake of Barrage Mohammed V, and the dramatic Beni Snassen mountains.

History

Oujda was founded in 944 AD by the Maghrawa Berber chieftain Ziri ibn Atiyya, making it one of Morocco's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Its position on the main east-west route across North Africa made it perpetually contested — by the Merinids, Zianids of Tlemcen, Ottomans, and eventually France and Spain. The French established Oujda as a key military and administrative centre during the protectorate period. The Algerian border, closed since 1994, has profoundly shaped the city's economy and identity.

Culture & Traditions

Oujda has a rich musical heritage: Raï music — the contemporary North African popular genre — has deep roots here and in nearby Algeria. The city also preserves classical Andalusian malhun music traditions. The Thursday livestock market at Sidi Yahia Oasis (10km away) is one of the region's most authentic rural markets. Pottery from the Figuig oasis region is sold throughout Oujda's souks.

Must-See Sights

1

Medina of Oujda

A living medina with Merinid-era gates (Bab el-Gharbi), bustling souks and authentic local life far from tourist circuits.

2

Sidi Yahia Oasis

A sacred palm oasis 6km from the city centre, venerated by Muslims, Jews and Christians — home to a remarkable inter-faith shrine.

3

Beni Snassen Mountains

Dramatic limestone mountains 50km north with caves, gorges and Berber villages — perfect for hiking and 4x4 exploration.

4

Barrage Mohammed V

A vast reservoir lake surrounded by hills 80km from Oujda — excellent for birdwatching, particularly flamingos in winter.

5

Bab el-Gharbi

The 14th-century western gate of the medina — the best-preserved of Oujda's ancient city gates.

Food & Drink

Rfissa Oujdie

Oujda's version of this slow-cooked chicken dish, distinctive for its heavier use of ras el hanout and dried fruits.

Madfouna

A buried bread stuffed with spiced minced meat, almonds and onions — a specialty of the Oriental region.

Bourak

Deep-fried pastry parcels filled with egg, onion and herbs — sold as street food throughout the medina.

Karantita

Chickpea flour pancake with cumin and egg — an Algerian-influenced street breakfast eaten with a spoon from a clay bowl.

Insider Tips

  • ✓Oujda is very safe and Moroccan tourism infrastructure works normally — ignore outdated warnings about the border region.
  • ✓The city is extremely hot July–August (40°C+); spring and autumn are ideal.
  • ✓Rent a car to explore the Oriental region — public transport to Beni Snassen and Barrage Mohammed V is limited.
  • ✓The university gives the city a young, lively atmosphere — the pedestrian Rue du Marché is excellent for café culture.
  • ✓Al Massira Park is a beautiful French-era garden perfect for an evening walk.
