Overview
Morocco's capital is consistently underrated by tourists who rush to Marrakech and Fes. Rabat offers a gentler, more livable version of Moroccan city life: a UNESCO-listed medina without the hard-sell pressure, world-class museums, a coastal clifftop kasbah, and excellent restaurants. It's the city Moroccans most want to live in.
History
Rabat's strategic position at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river made it a fortified camp (ribat) as early as the 10th century. The Almohad sultan Yacoub al-Mansour began the Hassan Tower and a grand mosque in 1195 — left unfinished at his death. The Andalusian Moriscos expelled from Spain settled the Kasbah des Oudaias in the 17th century. France made Rabat the colonial capital in 1912, laying the Ville Nouvelle grid.
Culture & Traditions
Rabat is famous for its distinctive embroidery (Rabati broderie) — a geometric style in blue on white linen. The Andalusian musical tradition brought by Moorish refugees survives in classical orchestras. The Kasbah des Oudaias retains a distinct Andalusian character: whitewashed walls, blue-painted details, and hanging gardens.
