Overview
Safi is Morocco's pottery capital and one of its most underrated cities. The hill of potters (Colline des Potiers) produces the distinctive blue-and-green Safi ceramics sold across Morocco. Its Atlantic location makes it a world-class surf destination, and its Portuguese fortress is one of the best-preserved on the Moroccan coast.
History
The Portuguese established a trading post and fortress at Safi in the early 16th century — the Kechla fortress and the Portuguese Chapel inside the medina date from this period. The city became Morocco's most important Atlantic port. Today Safi's sardine canning industry is one of the world's largest, processing millions of tins annually.
Culture & Traditions
The pottery tradition dates back centuries — distinct blue and green geometric designs inspired by Islamic calligraphy. The Colline des Potiers (Potters' Hill) has over 100 workshops using traditional wood-fired kilns. Safi is Morocco's top surf destination for experienced surfers — the 'Safi Rights' wave is considered one of Africa's best.
