Overview
Sidi Ifni is Morocco's most unexpected architectural surprise — a perfectly preserved Spanish Art Deco city perched on Atlantic cliffs, returned to Morocco only in 1969. Its crumbling Modernist buildings, empty seafront promenade, and wild Atlantic surf create a melancholy, time-forgotten beauty unlike anywhere else in Morocco.
History
Spain occupied this site in 1476 and ceded it to Morocco in 1860 — but then reoccupied it in 1934. The Spanish built an entirely new city in the Art Deco and Neo-Moorish style during the 1930s–1950s, including a unique sea landing strip (the only airport in the world with a runway running through the city center, now closed). Morocco formally recovered it in 1969.
Culture & Traditions
The city hosts one of Morocco's best surf breaks — the 'Sidi Ifni left' beach break. The surrounding Guelmim region is the traditional territory of the Reguibat nomads, known as 'the people of the clouds'. The camel market at Guelmim (90km) is one of Morocco's most authentic.
