Marrakech, Essaouira (Sub-Saharan heritage)

Gnawa is a mesmerizing blend of sub-Saharan African spiritual traditions, Arab Islamic influences, and Berber culture. Hypnotic, meditative, and deeply spiritual, Gnawa performances often last for hours and are rooted in mystical trance rituals. The music gained international attention in the 1990s through the Essaouira Gnawa Festival.

With frank lyrics about love, alcohol, and social critique, Raï scandalized conservative elders but became the voice of urban youth. Moroccan artists adapted it into a distinctly Moroccan form.
